Preparing all relevant materials at the same time

The call, the application process and the evaluation process are all part of a whole – an overarching funding initiative aimed to incentivise the resolution of a good problem. While they need to make sense as processes on their own, they also need to fit into this wider initiative.

It’s not always easy to keep this in mind if you’re designing a number of calls at the same time.

To help think of these processes as part of a whole, we ask the following questions:

When designing the Call:

  • What kind of solutions is the call asking for and what are the criteria for a valid solution?

When designing the Application:

  • What is the proposed solution?
  • How does the solution meet the criteria?
  • How is the applicant going to deliver the solution?

When designing the Evaluation:

  • Does the proposed solution meet the criteria for the call?
  • Is the applicant (and team) best suited to deliver the solution?

These questions are useful because they help focus the design of the application and evaluation process around two central features – the solution and the criteria, without imposing any format limitations.
